Hyperuricemia is a common, yet often overlooked, metabolic comorbidity of childhood obesity. Although gout is rare in children, chronic elevation of uric acid can have similar systemic
consequences as in adults - including the development of arterial hypertension, insulin resistance, and kidney damage. This article summarizes current knowledge about its prevalence, pathophysiology, consequences, diagnosis and treatment in children and adolescents with obesity.
Keywords: hyperuricemia, obesity, children, uric acid, allopurinol, prevention, cardiovascular risk
